I'll have to probably wait a few weeks/months of use before the restarting comes up again. I can even uninstall and reinstall from the current imatlab branch, so I can't reproduce the restarting kernel problem at the moment.
Now the kernel doesn't continuously restart. Only after I reinstalled Calysto and then the older imatlab branch, is the problem 'fixed' itself. I had been manually reinstalling the matlab kernel (ls /Applications/MATLAB_R2018b.app/extern/engines/python/) uninstalling ('pip uninstall imatlab') and reinstalling ('pip install imatlab' then 'python -mimatlab install') and various deleting of /usr/local/share/jupyter/kernel/imatlab to no avail. It's a bit perplexing, now installing from current master branch works.
